The Institute is a cooperative program between the NewYork Times Company and various organizations for the benefit of their student members.

In the first two weeks of January the Institute is offered for student members of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. The January Institute alternates between Miami and Tucson. The 2009 Institute will be held in Miami from Jan 2 to 12. The deadline to apply is Oct. 25, 2008, and students will be notified whether they have been accepted no later than Nov. 22, 2008.

In the last two weeks of May, the Institute is held in New Orleans for students who are members of the National Association of Black Journalists or who are enrolled at a historically black college or university that is represented by the Black College Communication Association. The 2009 Institute will be held May 17 through 30. The deadline to apply is Feb. 27, 2009, and students will be notified whether they have been accepted no later than March 28, 2009.

(For either Institute, students who wish to attend but may have academic conflicts should contact the director of the Institute, Don R. Hecker to determine if special arrangements can be made.)

To apply for the 2009 Institutes, students must be members of the eligible organizations, must submit an essay of up to 500 words on why they want to be a journalist, must submit an application form and six published clips (from a print or Web publication). Applicants seeking to specialize in photography, graphics, design or multimedia may submit a portfolio of at least six examples of their work, whether published or not.

  1. YouIntern.com 2.0 Promo:

    Hello Everyone!

My name’s Anand Chopra-McGowan, and I work with some friends on a site called YouIntern.com.

Our site is a community for interns to review their internships, and employers to post open ones.

We’re currently in the process of launching a new-and-improved 2.0 version, where employers and interns will be able to be matched based on specific profile information. For students, it’s all free!

I would greatly appreciate it if you could take a look at the site – http://www.youintern.com – and let me know what you think! Post a review too!

    Thanks for your time…

    Cheers,
    Anand
